Sharpness problems, from shake to focus
Why it happens
- The shutter speed was too slow for a moving subject — even 1/60s blurs walking people.
- Camera shake: at slow shutter speeds your own hands blur the whole frame.
- The camera focused on the background because the focus point sat in the middle of the frame.
- The sharp zone was thinner than you thought — at f/1.8 it can be a couple of centimetres.
How to fix it
- 1
Raise the shutter speed: 1/250s for people, 1/500s or faster for anything moving quickly.
- 2
Let ISO rise to pay for the faster shutter — a grainy sharp photo beats a clean blurred one.
- 3
Move the focus point onto your subject (or use eye-detect AF) instead of focusing in the centre and recomposing.
- 4
Brace yourself: elbows in, lean on a wall, or use a tripod for anything under 1/60s.
- 5
Check whether the whole frame is blurry (shake) or only the subject (focus) — they have different fixes.
